HFM × Arthaus – Metropolis (Robotic Angel)

Moderation: Ulrich Wegenast

Guests: Stefan Riekeles

Prior to the screening, the curator and producer of the Anime Architecture exhibition, Stefan Riekeles, will give an introductory talk on Anime Architecture: Imagined Worlds and Endless Megacities (also published by Thames & Hudson in 2020).

Rintaro's anime Metropolis (JP 2001) is based on a 1949 manga by Japanese artist Osamu Tezuka.

Private detective Shunsaku Ban travels to Metropolis with his nephew Kenichi to find and catch the wanted Dr. Laughton. He works there on behalf of Duke Red on a robot girl, Tima. With her help he wants to achieve world domination. Bewitched by the girl, Kenichi flees with Tima without realizing the connection, from Duke Red's foster son, who is not very pleased that a machine should take over the inheritance instead of him.
